This week Eric and I talk about the pros and cons of pre-made adventures and campaign worlds.

Reminder, if you have questions you'd like answered in a future show, or have comments/suggestions/feedback, please post them in the comments or email us at surlygrognards@yahoo.com

  1. Yay for our 1st ed campaign!

    Custom world and pre-made adventures.

But yeah, 1st ed ad&d system is pretty bizzare. Extremely simplistic in some ways and overly complex in others.

  2. Wow, thanks for answering my question (I'm Mr Email). It's so rare that I actually get an answer on one of these podcasts.

I don't think I would be a bad DM, at least in some aspects of DMing, so I'm not afraid to pick up the role of DM if need be, since I've actually made a campaign world, but I feel like the other non-world building parts of DMing, I'd need to understudy a good gm, in a sense, before running a game.

Looking forward to the next episode, as always.

  3. I think another con to personal campaign settings and adventures is the sense of attachment you can develop for the content. I haven't had this problem to any severe degree in my games, but I've heard plenty of stories: A GM who's so protective of his homebrew material that he carefully coaches and railroads the party into the actions they have to take, or a GM who loses her shit when the party ruins her best laid plans.

It's important to remember that your personal content is going to be shared with people that may not share your beliefs and interests, and be prepared when the party starts changing your expectations. That's a basic rule of GMing in general, but harder to remember when it's YOUR content being "tarnished."
